Hi friends! It is Alvin from the tuba section! Yup that’s me with a tuba on my lap. I mean the one who photobombed the photo. Yesterday marked the last of our combined rehearsals before InTempo. We were extremely delighted having everyone come together to refine our pieces for the very last time. Oh! If you haven’t already noticed, there is just one more week to our upcoming concert — InTempo 2016: To the Stars. You can’t imagine how eager and excited we are to present the concert to you as it took us more than 10 weeks to prepare for it. Initially, some of us felt slightly down as the repertoire is pretty challenging. In fact, even our beloved conductor, Prof Ho, was told by his colleagues: “Wah why did you guys 自找麻烦(seek for trouble)?” “I told them it is not 麻烦 (trouble), it is an interesting experience. Yes, it challenges me and it challenges you. But it is also part of learning. At the end of the day, we will improve and overcome it together.” Prof Ho’s words have proven to be true, but words can’t fully describe how the rehearsal last night was. Shall we let the photos do the talking? Prof Ho’s conducting. Mr. Tan’s conducting. Everyone threw themselves into the music with enthusiasm. Siyao with his 100% focus. Our 10-strong trumpet players. Music making in progress. And we were having fun too! No! It is a camera! Oh! Say hi to a camera! Amanda and Sarah playing the bass clarinets elegantly (Sorry I photobombed again!) Photo credits to Muhammad Hafiz Rahman and Fong Kean Min It was a fruitful and joyful rehearsal, in which our members had overcome the challenges and enjoyed themselves in the mellifluous music. We hope you can feel our passion and excitement to deliver you an unforgettable evening on this coming Sunday. *Ding (announcement sound) Ladies and gentlemen, please proceed to your seats and fasten your seat belt. The NUSWS spaceship is ready to take you on an epic journey to explore the human imagination of the vast outer-space. Hold on tight! Captain Alvin H. Hello people! The name’s Alvin, and today’s blog post is about our Da Capo concert series and lovely musicians! It’s almost mid October and I hope everyone is doing fine! Be it projects, lab reports, assignments or presentations, I fully understand all these struggles as I myself am an undergraduate too! So why not take a break and see what I have for you today. So what exactly is Da Capo? Da Capo means from the beginning in Italian, a musical term that is usually abbreviated as D.C. in sheet music. To the NUSWS, it signifies our young spirits braving the journey ahead with an open heart. Since the start of Da Capo in 2006, the series has always been designed to showcase the talents of our freshmen. Over the past 10 years, Da Capo has featured various genres of music including animation, pop, films, and musicals. With their unyielding spirit and desire to explore further, our young musicians grow and excel together despite the challenging pieces. Did you know that Da Capo is only put up in the first semester of the academic year, often in October? As its name implies, Da Capo marks the start of a new academic year as well as the beginning of our freshman life as a student musician in the NUSWS. Are any of these Da Capo posters familiar to you? I would love to talk about our repertoire over the past 10 years, but it would take me days and nights! For now, let’s talk about something more exciting – our beloved musicians! With resounding success in our previous recruitment events (e.g. TRIO camp, welcome tea and orientation camp), today we have a 100-strong band performing for Da Capo X, more than half of whom are freshmen. We cannot wait to present to you the concert that has been prepared by our young musicians for the past two months. Now, let us take a look at the section photos. Here comes the largest section – Clarinet #thuglife Wonder what a flute can be used for other than producing graceful tunes? Let our flute section show you! Our trumpet section, all ready to swing! Watch out! The trombonists are emptying their spit! S for Superpower Saxophone Section! Greetings from our French horn section in red and violet tones! Anyone interested in joining the percussion section? Our special agents, the double reeds, are ready for action! Greetings from the euphonium section! (Note: that is not a tuba) Here comes the Basses airline! They are ready to bring you on a flight to an evening of good music! And of course! Our lovely EXCO who make Da Capo X possible! Well, that surely is a lot of lovely photos and faces to you. I hope you feel our excitement and passion to deliver an unforgettable concert experience this coming Sunday to everyone!
I hope this post has given you a better understanding of our Da Capo concert series and musicians. For those who have not made up their minds to attend our amazing concert, do not hesitate further!
